Woman Killed In Crossfire

A 26-year-old woman was killed by a stray bullet following a shootout between some land guards and the police at Oni Adaroma, near Kasoa in the Central Region, last Sunday. The victim, Ayeley Ramatu, is said to have found herself in the area when the exchange of fire was taking place. Three of the land guards Kwame Nii Ayi, Nii Armah and Joseph Adu have been arrested and are currently assisting the police in their investigations. According to the Public Relations Officer of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Police Service, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Joseph Darkwa, about 3 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, 2013, the police had a distress call from a man at Oni Adaroma. According to the police, the man claimed that residents of the village had been living in constant fear because of the activities of land guards and that even at that material time of his call the land guards were harassing some landowners. ASP Darkwa said the police responded quickly to the call, and that as soon as the land guards saw the police they opened fire on the police. The police returned fire and in the course of the exchanges a stray bullet hit the woman, killing her instantly.
