32-Year-Old Man Dies After Participating In Akeptsehie Competition

A 32-year-old father with a wife and children, Yaw Berko, has met his untimely death after gulping 'akpeteshie'(pure locally made alcoholic spirit) in a daring mood in bid to scare his competitors. The competition was said to be held at Pakyi Number Two, a town at Amansie West District in the Ashanti Region. The deceased, Yaw Berko and a close pal who is also reported to be a heavy drinker, Eko Mensah, challenged themselves at a local bar which attracted a lot of people. The 'akpeteshie' aficionados took time off to drink volumes of the substance an amateur would take years to consume. His friend, who was obviously under the influence of the substance, spiked him by telling him he could consume the liquor since he is a new kid on the bloc when it comes to taking such volumes. Upon seeing the large gathering, Yaw Berko felt a need to impress and ordered for a big bottle of the locally brewed gin to heat the competition. When the drink was delivered, Yaw Berko quickly drank the content down his throat without wasting time. He sapped the dregs out of the bottle and within three minutes his eye balls were seen roving abnormally. Those who sensed danger tried their best to help him by rushing him to a nearby hospital for treatment, but Yaw Berko, the former King of akpeteshie was pronounced dead by the health authorities.
