The National Road Safety Commission is set to launch a pedestrian campaign as part of their road safety initiatives. Scheduled to be launched on May 2, 2013 at Lapaz in Accra, it comes with the theme, �Be alert, Look out for other road users.� The senior planning officer of the National Road Safety Commission, Samuel Obeng Asiamah speaking on e.tv Ghana�s Awake said that, the campaign is set to create awareness that there are other road users apart from vehicles which need to be given attention. He stated that, the programme has been organized purposely for all road users especially pedestrians, as a result of the upsurge of pedestrian fatality in the country. Touching on Zebra Crossings in the country, he said the crossing was designed for pedestrian use but drivers have decided to ignore it. He added that, pedestrians have the right to cross the road where there is an indication of a zebra crossing. However, knowing the Zebra crossing is for pedestrians should not be a platform for them to trail it anyhow. As part of the awareness, the National Road Safety Commission is coming together with the town authorities, and the public to go on a health walk from Tetteh Quarshie to the Lapaz NI road, which has been the center of pedestrian fatality in recent months. Mr.Asiamah said, their target for this campaign is to create a fatality free week, where Ghana will run a whole week without any fatality as far as road accident is concerned. �We need everyone on board and the kind of help the people can give us is to use the road safely.� He added.
