Load Shedding Not Ended Yet VRA

Head of Corporate Communications at the Volta River Authority (VRA) Samuel Kwesi Fletcher says Ghanas energy reserve margin is not enough to end the current load shedding exercise. I will be able to hit my chest and say dumso dumso has ended when I can tell you about reserve margin. Currently, I wont be able to do that, Mr Fletcher told our correspondent on Monday, May 6, 2013. According to him, without enough reserve margins, parts of the country will still experience power rationing as a result of energy required to ensure the maintenance of equipment. The switch-on of one of the three turbines at the Bui Hydroelectric Dam last Friday by President John Dramani Mahama was believed to reduce the power crisis the country has been plagued with and assurances by the Ministry of Energy that the load-shedding exercise will end in the first week of May gave Ghanaians hope that the exercise will be no more. Mr Fletcher, however, explained that the addition of 133MW from the Bui Dam will help us generate enough energy capacity to meet the current demand. He said to be able to run an effective system, at least 20 per cent of the reserve margin is needed. Load shedding started in August, 2012 after damage to the West African Gas Pipeline.
