Two teachers have been arrested in Kumasi for allegedly aiding some candidates to cheat in the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). Mr Patrick Osei-Wusu, 55, of the Chirapatre M/A Junior High School (JHS) was arrested on June 18, 2013, while Mr Rexford Holland, 43, of the St Louis Demonstration JHS was apprehended Wednesday. They have been placed in custody at the Kumasi Zongo Police Station. According to the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinator of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Mr William Amexo, during a tour of some examination centres with his deputy, Mr Samuel Opare Bampoe, last Tuesday, he saw some candidates at the Asem Boys� Examination Centre who had the same answers at the back of their question papers. Mr Amexo said when he and his deputy interrogated the candidates, they alleged that it was Mr Osei-Wusu who had dictated those answers to them. When Mr Osei-Wusu was confronted, he initially denied any knowledge of the answers, but upon further interrogation, he was said to have confessed to the act. He was then handed over to the Zongo Police for further investigations. Wednesday morning, Mr Amexo said, Holland was arrested at the R/C Girls� School Examination Centre, near the St Louis JHS at Mbrom in Kumasi, for an alleged examination malpractice. Holland, who was invigilating at the centre, was caught teaching the candidates. He was also found to have stored Mathematics objectives questions on his mobile phone. Holland was arrested and placed in police custody for further investigations. A total of 78,348 candidates, comprising 41,110 males and 37,238 females, are writing the ongoing BECE in the Ashanti Region. Mr Amexo cautioned the candidates not to allow anyone to entice them to perpetrate any illegalities which could lead to the cancellation of their papers.
