Ken Kurachies Rights Are Being Abused

A leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Professor Mike Oquaye has accused the Ghana Prisons Service of abusing the human rights of the Editor of the Daily Searchlight, Ken Kuranchie. The Supreme Court on Tuesday jailed Mr. Kuranchie for criminal contempt following an editorial by his paper in relation to the ban of the Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Sammy Awuku by the court. Since his incarceration, Mr. Kuranchie is reported to have been transferred to about three prisons of which his family and the members of the NPP have raised concerns. Sharing his thoughts on the matter on the Big Issue on Saturday, Prof. Oquaye noted that the constant shuttling between prisons is a human rights abuse and I know from my legal practice both in England and in Ghana that a prisoner cannot be transferred under those circumstance because it is discriminatory, it is harassment and it is inhumanwe dont treat a person like that. You cannot say a person is a prisoner so every 3 am, you go and wake him up and tell him something or take him somewhere. These are matters that are part and parcel of criminalization. Onipa nye aboa [human beings are not animals]. According to him, this development must be brought to the attention of the Minister of Interior, the Director of Prisons and other relevant institutions because a Ghanaians right is at stake...Its not political, its not anything but he must be given a certain kind of respect.
