One way various associations have been able to catch the attention of government, is to declare a strike actions. Over the past decade, strike declarations have become the most useful tool unions have used to get their unpaid salaries and allowances restored to their various accounts. The syndrome would always be active so far as the problem attached to the single spine pay policy has not been resolved. Declaring strike actions has almost become a clich and a button to push when one needs the attention of government. But a Labour Expert, Austin Gamey, says the current spate of requests by workers to negotiate the payment of premiums if not controlled, can have a negative impact on the economy. Speaking to Radio Ghana on the recent strike by the Teachers and Education Workers Union, TEWU, Mr. Gamey said the current situation should be of major concern. He stated that the stance of some Labour Unions will not help the nation and explained that there is a need for the leadership of Unions to appreciate the issues at stake before they embark on any strike.
