Research conducted by a non Governmental Organization called the Mens Health Foundation has uncovered there is high prevalence of prostate cancer in Ghana. Still conducting screening exercises in some selected communities in the Greater Accra region, it has been revealed that one out of six men is suffering from prostate cancer. It is against this backdrop the Mens Health Foundation in collaboration with the St. Johns General Hospital has established a Mens clinic at Tantra Hills in Accra to take care of prostate cancer patients. By extension, the organization has released a book titled What everyman must know before and after 40 years to keep men well educated on prostate cancer, its risk and management. At the official launch in Accra, the author, Mr. Raphael Obu of the MSC Prostate Cancer Sheffield Hallam University bemoaned the increasing development of prostate cancer in Ghana which he said some people have taken advantage of and given wrong treatment options. He said the book sought to educate men on early detection of prostate cancer and its risk management courtesy the Prostate Cancer Risk Management Program (PCRMP). According to him, the Prostate Cancer Risk Management Program had been replicated in Ghana to address the issues of false positive and false negative PSA results. He recalled that as practiced in the United Kingdom, patients would have to undergo counseling before the PSA testing. Mr. Raphael thus invited interested people to visit the St. Johns General Hospital for guidance and Counseling. If you are worried about a specific problem, or otherwise worried about the risks of cancer, then you should talk to us at the St. Johns General Hospital. He explained the programs objective saying, The aim of Prostate Cancer Risk Management Program is to ensure that men who are concerned about the risk of prostate cancer receive clear and balanced information about the advantages and disadvantages of the PSA test and treatment for prostate cancer.; this will help men to decide whether they want to have the test. He thus advised patients to contact Urologist and prostate cancer specialists for medical attention since cancer treatment depended on what he termed the Gleason Score and stage of the cancer. The mission and vision of the Mens Health Foundation is to provide accurate information and advocacy on prostate disease through men fellowship in the churches, men clubs, schools, television, radio etc. The organization also acts as a support group to men with prostate diseases and also to raise awareness across the country through fundraising activities and special events.
