A leading telecommunications company in the country, MTN, has donated GHc3,000.00 towards the successful celebration of this year�s �Kobine" Festival of the Chiefs and people of Lawra Traditional Area in the Upper West Region.
The package includes GHc500.00 worth of airtime, a drink hamper also worth GHc500.00 and some assorted MTN souvenirs.
Mr. Samuel Sarpong, MTN Senior Commercial Manager in charge of the Northern Business District presented the cheque and items to the Paramount Chief of the Lawra Traditional Area, Naa Edward Puowele Karbo III in Lawra on Friday.
He said the gesture was a demonstration of MTN�s commitment towards the celebration of the Festival.
Mr Sarpong described the theme for the festival, �Reducing Poverty through Science and Technology in Agriculture�, as appropriate since agriculture was the backbone of the economy.
He observed that people could no longer rely solely on traditional methods such as predicting the rainfall pattern to plan their farming activities.
It was, therefore, appropriate for them to reassess the methods applied in order to adopt best practices that would make agriculture an attractive and lucrative venture for the people.
The MTN Senior Commercial Manager announced that the MTN Farm Direct Service on mobile phone provided farmers with up-to-date information on farming and agricultural extension services, and appealed to farmers to subscribe in order to benefit from the service.
Mr. Sarpong said MTN through the MTN Ghana Foundation had so far invested over GH₵13 million in development projects countrywide, out of which the Upper West Region alone took GH₵284.000.00 in projects.
Naa Karbo thanked MTN for supporting the festival for the fourth time, adding that the support was not only consistent but also kept on increasing both in quantum and variety.
He said in order for the festival not to become one for only merry-making, farmers would be at the center stage, and that a platform had been created for them to interact and share ideas on issues of climate change with experts.
