Ministry Of Education With Support From The UK Government Launches Textbooks For Basic Schools

The Government of Ghana today launched its provision of textbooks for 5.6 million Ghanaian children in 23,000 Primary and Junior High Schools across the country. With support from the UK government, each child will now have a textbook in each of the core subjects; English, Maths and Science. The provision of textbooks worth Fifty Million Dollars ($50,000,000) will mean the situation where two or more children in Primary and Junior High Schools shared one text book will be a thing of the past. With the launch of these textbooks and accompanying teaching guides, it is hoped that there will be improvement in teaching and learning in all basic schools throughout the country. HE Peter Jones, British High Commissioner said: Education is a major part of UKs development programme in Ghana recognising our shared commitment to ensuring that every Ghanaian child gets a good education. I am very pleased to be part of this launch which marks the distribution of 13 million new textbooks and teaching guides which is a major step towards this goal. The Minister of Education, Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang who launched the textbooks, was of the hope that basic school teachers will take advantage of the provision of adequate textbooks and perform their duties very well.
