The General Secretary of the National Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie has described President Mahama�s promise to introduce new measures to tackle corruption as a sham. �Instead of the President availing himself of the opportunities that have been created by His Excellency J.A Kufour to fight corruption, he is not interested because he himself will be implicated,� he lamented. President Mahama on Tuesday announced that �in the next few weeks we will announce new measures to tighten the system to ensure more transparency and make corruption more difficult to undertake. Government has come under pressure to fight corruption with the public sector after it was revealed that the Ghana Revenue Authority paid a private company, Subah Infosolutions millions for no work done. Two prominent members of the governing party, Alban Bagbin and Martin Amidu have also questioned the President�s commitment to the fight against corruption in the country. According to him, the President�s announcement just goes to reaffirm the President�s lack of willingness to tackle corruption in his government. In an interview with Citi News the NPP General Secretary lamented that the President should have ordered state institutions responsible for fighting corruption instead of making new promises. This according to him is because during President Kufuor�s tenure in office, institutions charged with fighting corruption in the country were supported to do so. Mr. Owusu Afriyie questioned why the President is not using any of those institutions to fight corruption now. He questioned �are we now going to wait for the President to create new institutions to fight corruption, when the police are there, when EOCO is there, when the courts are there?� Mr. Owusu Afriyie, is thereby calling on the President to allow the institutions tasked with fighting corruption to do their job since that will help in the fight against corruption.
