Prez Mahama Intended To Silence Discussion On Victoria Hammahs Tape With 25% Electricity Tariff Reduction

The move taken by President Mahama to reduce electricity tariff increment from 78.9 percent to 59.18 percent has been described by Executive Member of Truth Accountable Forum (TAF), Collins .K. Amoah as a political gimmick to muzzle discussions on the leaked tape recording of the former Deputy Minister of Communication, Victoria Hammah. According to him, contents of the recorded tape is an indictment on President Mahamas administration in terms of corruption and the legitimacy of his Presidency since a cabinet minister is mentioned to have met the judges before the final verdict of the 2012 Presidential election petition was read. Speaking on the diversionary tactics employed by government on Hot Fm, Collins Amoah stressed that it is not the duty of the government of the day to reduce electricity tariffs by any figure, thus government usurp the job of the Public Utility and Regulatory Commission (PURC) just to kill off discussions over Ms. Victoria Hammahs secret tape. He wondered when the President Mahama found it reasonable to mitigate the sufferings of Ghanaians. .they want discussions on Victoria Hammah to be silenced because the tariff increment was around 280 percent, then it moved to 150 and later to 78.9 percent but they never thought it prudent to reduce the tariff to 59.18 percent when utilities service providers proposed 280 percent of tariff increment, he asserted. To him, this is simply a political gimmick to divert the minds of Ghanaians to issues bordering on tariffs; and alluding to comments by the PURC that a single percentage reduction of the tariffs could plunge the country into serious crisis. in four months time, the PURC will again announce the need for the utility service providers to use another measure to recoup the debt incurred by government for slashing down electricity tariff to 59.18 percent, he said.
