Teacher Trainees On Rampage

The Northern Regional Chapter of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG) has issued a weeks ultimatum to government to rescind its decision to withdraw the monthly allowances of teacher trainees or incur its wrath. Members of Northern Regional Chapter of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana, who wore red arm bands to classes, indicated that they would be compelled to hit the streets to demonstrate against government and its agencies for taking such inhumane decision which they claimed would be adversely affect the education sector. According to them, the student loan scheme, as proposed by government, was not feasible and could not be equated to the allowances that had been withdrawn by government. Innusah Bihinaa, Senior Prefect of the Tamale College of Education and leading member of the group, told DAILY GUIDE that the implementation of the new policy would lead to a reduction in enrollment in the colleges. This, according to him, was a deliberate attempt by government to further worsen the educational sector, which in the past years, has not seen any improvement in terms of the deplorable teacher-pupil ratio. He disclosed that most students on campuses, who hitherto could not satisfy their educational needs, relied on the allowances. The Senior Prefect reiterated their resolve to vehemently oppose the policy, noting that it would subject them to harsh economic hardship. We have been given a raw deal and the earlier we resist it the better for us, he remarked. A number of students, who supported the decision of the leadership, promised to fight continuously to compel government to take a second look at the policy.
