The Mayor of Accra, Alfred Vanderpuije, has revealed prosecution of persons arrested in connection with the Melcom disaster will commence soon. According to him, investigations into the disaster have long been completed. 14 people died and several others got injured when a six-storey building housing the Melcom shopping mall at Achimota collapsed in 2012. The owner of the building, Nana Boadu Nkansah Ayeboafo, together with the Accra Metropolitan Assembly�s (AMA) Ga West Director of Works, Carl Henry Clarke, were subsequently arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) but were later granted bail. The mayor�s comments come on the back of the collapse of another six-storey hotel building under construction at Nii Boye Town claiming one life. In an interview Citi News, Mr. Vanderpuije recounted that the AMA assisted the Police and the BNI in investigating the Melcom disaster and confirmed that �the complete investigation has been done.� He said the Assembly is awaiting the commencement of the full trial and when it begins �we believe that they have all the facts to prosecute� insisting that �I am sure one of these days, the prosecution will start.� Mr. Vanderpuije was however quick to add that he is not privy to the sole reasons for the delay in dealing with the matter. According to him, the prosecution team had to be furnished with the medical records of the victims to help them build their case.
