Bawku records two Cerebro Spinal Meningitis cases (CSM)

Health officials in the Bawku Municipality have recorded two Cerebro Spinal Meningitis (CSM) cases in two health facilities in the Bawku area since December 2013. The first case was recorded in December 2013 in the Mognori Community Health Base Planning Service (CHPS) compound, a sub district facility under Bawku, while the second one was recorded in the first week of March this year, at the Bawku Central Urban Health Centre. Records from the Bawku Municipal Health Directorate on the epidemic indicated that there were no deaths related to the two reported cases. Mr Bawa Abdul-Hakeem, Bawku Municipal Health Information Officer, disclosed this in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on behalf of the Municipal Health Director, Mrs Rosemond Azure at Bawku. Mr Abdul-Hakeem hinted that the directorate had already put in place stringent measures, including public education, on the disease to create awareness and completely eradicate it from the area. He disclosed that the directorate has already vaccinated school children and prison inmates, and intends covering the whole of the municipality very soon. The Health information Officer said the Directorate has intensified its surveillance at all the health facilities in the area, to ensure that it receives update on the disease to help it build more defenses to curtail it. Mr Abdul-Hakeem said the Bawku Municipality has been divided into two zones and two sub-districts, which include Urban West, with a population of 27,460, Urban East with 3,3643 and the Mognori sub-district population is 13,727 while Koka-Zabugu sub-districts has a population of 26,145. He told the GNA that with this number, the directorate was working hard to ensure that the area was epidemic-free, and said efforts were being made to ensure that no life was lost this year. Mr Abdul-Hakeem called on the people to sleep in ventilated rooms, ensure that all windows are opened, and avoid getting direct contact with rays of the sun.
