PURC Increases Tariffs; Defers Start Date

The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has increased electricity and water tariffs by 12.09 per cent and 6.05 per cent respectively. However, the implementation date for the review would not take immediate effect for the second quarter of the year which commences on April 1, 2014. In January 2014, the PURC announced an increase of 9.7 per cent on electricity and 6.80 per cent on water precipitated by the full implementation of the automatic adjustment formula (AAF). A statement signed by the Chairman of the PURC, Dr Emmanuel K. Annan, said the current load shedding and unsatisfactory service delivery by the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) was the reason for the postponement. This decision of the Commission stems from its mandate of protecting the interest of the consumers of utility services at this challenging period of inadequate generation resulting in a supply deficit, the statement said. It said the appropriate date for the implementation of the reviewed tariffs would be determined by the Commission at a later date. The Commission would keenly monitor the current water and electricity situation and determine the effective and appropriate date for the implementation of the second quarter automatic adjustment formula, the statement said.
