The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) is advising subscribers of the health insurance scheme to visit the NHIA offices for the biometric cards only when their old cards are near expiration.
This, according to the Authority, is aimed at reducing the congestion and long queues at the NHIA centers where the instant biometric cards are being issued.
The NHIA has increased the terminals for registration at selected centers and has also extended the working hours of its personnel to enable all clients to be served.
This became necessary due to the overwhelming number of persons hoping to biometrically register with the health insurance scheme.
The NHIA is undertaking a biometric registration exercise as a means of issuing instant NHIS cards to its subscribers.
The biometric system of registration according to the Authority is to enable them effectively build efficiently an ID card management regime and help the Authority verify card bearers at provider sites as NHIS subscribers report for medical care.
Speaking to Citi News, the Communication�s Manager of NHIA, Selorm Adonoo said, there was no need for users to rush to centers for new cards.
He stated that the old NHIS cards are as valid as the new ones saying, �if you have a card which expires in five months, in six months, in eight months, there is no need for you to go to the center for a new one because the old cards are as valid as the new ones.�
According to him, �facilities across the country and especially in all regions where the biometric system is currently operating are aware that they have to accept the old cards and the new cards until a time that we are able to phase out the old ones completely.
