31 Ghetto Youth Grabbed

Thirty-one suspected criminals have been smoked out from their hideout at Ashaiman and its environs by police personnel from Accra and Tema. The 64 police personnel drawn from the Rapid Force (RDF) Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) and the Anti-Armed Robbery Squad undertook the six-hour operation to rid the municipality of miscreants. The Police were said to have retrieved drugs from four suspects. The names of the suspects were given as Baaba Abaa, 20, trader; Mohammed Ayuba, 19, welder; Nathaniel Essifie, 23, mechanic and Kwaku Eddie, a 20-year-old unemployed. All the suspects who were arrested with wrapped substances believed to Indian hemp are being held by the Tema Regional Police Command pending further investigations and subsequent prosecution. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Beatrice Zakpaa Vib-Sanziri, the Tema Regional Police Commander, who briefed a section of the media at her office, mentioned that the operations were carried out at places like Atadeka, Saki, New York and Ashaiman Market Square. She cited �Spider Toilet�, a spot identified as safe haven for criminals and a famous ghetto called �I Shall Return� as places where the swoops were carried out by the police. The Regional Commander promised to do everything possible to flush out criminals from the Tema Metropolis. According to her, in a bid to intensify police presence in the people, the Command had secured some tents from the Police National Headquarters to be mounted at places like Gbetsile, New York and Asutuare where crime rate is said to be on ascendancy. She noted that armed men would be placed on 24-hour duty to respond to emergency in the vicinity as part of temporary measures �while we work on opening more police stations in these areas.� According to her, �Policing in these contemporary times is a shared responsibility and therefore I charge the general public to continue to collaborate with the regional command to get these criminals from our communities.� Furthermore, the Ashaiman Divisional Police Command, as part of activities to ensure the prosecution of all criminals, undertook an identification parade during which three of the suspects were said to have linked to several robbery attacks. The names of the suspects were given as Emmanuel Kofi Ntiamoh, Emmanuel Tetteh and Dela Danlad, all residents of Ashaiman.
