Two persons, including a 50-year-old farmer and his driver, suspected of killing a Fulani family of seven at a village called Mafi Kanyikpo, near Adidome in the Central Tongu District of the Volta Region, have been apprehended by the police. The suspects are Mensah Egbenya, aka Bessa and his driver, Kofi Adukpo, aka Alpha, 28 years. They were arrested at Hausakpe, three kilometers away from Sogakope in the region. The Murder Yakubu Beleko, the Fulani farmer; his wife, Patience Awunya, 30, together with five of their children four boys and a girl were discovered dead in their home on April 7, this year, about 3:30 pm. The cause of their death was not immediately known but police suspected a foul play. Commissioner of Police (COP) Prosper Kwame Agblor, Director-General in-charge of the Police Criminal Investigations Department (CID), told DAILY GUIDE that the bodies had almost decomposed when they were discovered by the police. Preliminary investigations suggested that the assassins locked the main door of the couple from outside to possibly prevent any person from having access to the crime scene. He said the body of Mr. Beleko was seen lying on their matrimonial bed while the wife and the children lay on the floor. Due to the state in which the bodies were, they were buried immediately by the relatives of the deceased in consultation with the chief of the area, but one of them was transferred to the Police Hospital for autopsy. The Arrest COP Agblor said discreet investigations led to the arrest of the two at Hausakpe on May 8, 2014. Investigations revealed that Yakubu Beleko had a case with the suspect at the Adidome magistrate court over a vehicle. Information gathered by this paper indicated that the court ruled in favour of Mr. Beleko, but the suspect was not happy about it. In addition, the court ordered suspect Mensah to refund an amount of GH4,000 to Beleko. The suspect and his driver, after allegedly committing the act, fled the area and were never seen there until their arrest on May 8. Eyewitness account revealed that the suspect and his driver, days before the bodies were discovered, were spotted together with some men on the compound of the family. Suspects Interrogation Meanwhile, suspects have refused to disclose how the entire family was murdered to the police. COP Agblor said some pellets were also discovered at the scene of the crime, but because the bodies were discovered days after the act, it was difficult to ascertain the cause of death. Meanwhile, investigations were still ongoing, he disclosed.
