Man, 32, Assaults Woman, 74

Maame Akua Darkoa, a 74-year-old woman, has prayed a magistrate court to ensure that true justice is done after being physically assaulted by a 32-year-old commercial driver, Ayim Samuel Atta. The victim, a trader at Akim-Apapam in the Eastern Region, was allegedly subjected to severe beating by the accused, also a native of the town, in June last year after she had questioned Ayim Samuel Atta in relation to his alleged defecating at her building site. Akua Darko mentioned that the infuriated accused hit her on the left rib two times which sent her on the ground. As a result, Akua Darkoa suffered dislocation on her hip bone and was hospitalized at the Kibi Government Hospital for many months thereby incurring huge medical bills. Despite the physical trauma and the financial challenges, the Kibi District Magistrate Court, presided over by Mrs. Comfort Asamoah Sarpong, slapped the accused with a GH120 fine as compensation for the complainant. Indications are that the court ruling did not go down well with the victim, who has termed it as a miscarriage of justice. The troubled septuagenarian told DAILY GUIDE in an interview that, I am highly disappointed in the courts. I consider the fine as an insult. My son, if I should tell you what financial burden this assault has brought to me and my children, you will marvel. I have spent so much money on laboratory tests and other medications. I was very active but have been immobile since the assault; I walk with a walking aide now. The visibly miffed woman further added, The accused keeps walking in the area shoulder high and brags that nobody can touch him; its unfortunate the system allows such people to go scot free and keep terrorizing people in some of our communities.
