A man who allegedly slashed the thigh of a final year female student of the University of Ghana in a robbery attack has been arrested by the police. The suspect, Shadrack Mensah, an unemployed resident at Santa Maria in Accra, was said to have attacked the student, Esther Yayra Attipoe, while she was on her way to a lecture hall from the Evandy Hostel at the University of Ghana. Attacker hides in bush The Legon Police District Commander, Superintendent of Police, Mr Emmanuel Basintale, said the incident occurred at about 7:50 a.m. on April 28, 2014 on the Evandy-Pentagon road on the Legon campus. He said the suspect, who had laid ambush, emerged from the bush and ordered the victim to surrender her bag which contained her Acer laptop, Samsung and Nokia mobile phones. According to the commander, she also had GH�52 cash in the bag, books containing her lecture notes and handouts. �The suspect took advantage of the quietness on the road and attacked the student,� he said. However, he said the student resisted and struggled with the suspect over the bag. It was during the struggle that the suspect pulled out the knife and slashed the thigh of the student, gaining the upper hand thereafter to snatch the bag and bolted. Hot chase The student then shouted for help and attracted a police team on patrol. �The policemen, led by the Legon District Commander, after hearing the plight of the student, �entered the bush in search of the perpetrator.� He indicated that in the process, the police spotted a man who took to his heels on seeing them, �but the police gave him a hot chase and arrested him.� The police found the items mentioned by victim on him and retrieved them. During interrogation, the suspect, according to the police, admitted the offence and led the police to the bush where the bag and knife used for slashing the student were found.
