To clamp down on drug peddling, the police in Accra have carried out on a swoop leading to the arrest of 90 persons the suspicion of dealing in narcotics.
They were arrested in areas believed to be dens of criminals by three out of the seven divisional police commands of the Accra Regional Police Command.
In the operation on Tuesday, June 3, 2014, the police retrieved substances suspected to be heroine, Indian hemp, and in some cases, cash.The exercise started simultaneously at 6 a.m. and ended at 12 noon. All the suspects were males.
In all, 240 policemen, including 24 senior officers drawn from the various police district commands under the divisions, including Dansoman, Tesano and Kaneshie, took part in the swoop.

The Dansoman Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent, Mr Antwi Tabiri, said the number of suspects arrested showed that crime rate had reduced.
The Korle Bu Police arrested only two suspects, but after screening, they were released as no evidence was found against them.
He said the other suspects from the Mamprobi area and Dansoman would be screened and their backgrounds would be investigated to find out if �any of them could be on the police wanted list in connection with some crime cases.�
The police retrieved two polythene bags full of dried leaves and wraps of a substance believed to be cannabis. In one of the dens, the dried leaves, which were soaked in the locally brewed alcohol, popularly known as �Akpeteshi�, was found in a bucket.

The Tesano Division Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Francis Aboagye Nyarko, told journalists yesterday that 24 suspects were picked up from crime-prone areas at Tesano, Mile Seven and Amasaman.
Two of the suspects arrested by the Tesano District Police, whose names were given as Tahira Issaka and Richardson Owusu, were found in possession of 115 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp and 85 wraps of suspected heroine and GH�167 cash.
At Mile Seven, he said two of the suspects, out of the six arrested, were caught smoking wraps of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.
The Kaneshie Divisional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police, Mr Ernest Owusu, said from the three districts under his command, 44 suspects were arrested.
He said after raiding the criminal dens at Bubuashie, Fadama, Darkuman and Abossey Okai, 21 people were arrested and four of them were believed to be kingpins in the supply of narcotics.
