GH6 Billion Otumfuos 15th Anniv. Cash Chokes NDC

The unfolding saga of the alleged GH600,000 that was supposed to have been used by the Ashanti regional executives of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to ferry people to the Kumasi Sports Stadium to witness Otumfuos 15th anniversary is far from over. Latest information picked up by GO has it that the Regional Organizer, Alhaji Sannie Jnr, in his attempt to divert the blame of their inability to get people into the stands, has mentioned Dr. Stephen Opuni as the person behind the whole debacle. A very reliable source close to Alhaji Sannie told this reporter that an initial number of hundred buses was agreed upon by the party and budgeted for with Dr. Opuni spear-heading the recruitment and as the one in charge of funds. But it was later realize that the number was too much and was subsequently reduced to 60 buses with funds allocated to feed the occupants to the stadium grounds and back. However, not even a handful of people were mobilized for the anniversary celebration, an issue Alhaji Sannie has challenged in some media circles. The Organizer claimed in a newspaper interview that they were able to ferry people to the stadium to the admiration of President Mahama. Party sources said the downsizing of the number of people the party requested from the executives to ferry to the stadium for the programme points to the fact that some of the funds were siphoned by some of the committee members. Some party members claim the plot to renege on the agreed plan to ferry many people to the grounds was the orchestration of top party executives. Grapevine information has it that some of the committee members hatched a grand plan not to carry people at all to the Baba Yara grounds for Otumfuos 15th anniversary celebration to make the Regional Minster, Dr. Samuel Sarpong unpopular in the region. Since the revelation that these monies were released to the party for the organization of busloads of NDC sympathizers, there has been series of acrimonious confrontations between some party members who have strong support for the regional minister and other who hold allegiance to the party chairman, Yaw Obinpah. Attempts by the paper to reach the regional organizer for comment on the unfolding saga hit a snag as his mobile phone was unreachable at press time last Thursday.
