MP Courts Support For Flood Victims

THE MEMBER of Parliament for Ejura-Sekyedumase, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Salisu Bamba, has sent an immediate appeal to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and other philanthropic bodies to, as a matter of urgency, come to the aid of hundreds of residents who were affected by severe rainstorms in his constituency. The MP says several hundreds of residents have been rendered homeless in some communities within the constituency following a heavy downpour last Friday. Hon. Alhaji Salisu Bamba says affected constituents would require urgent support from NADMO and other well-wishers to enable them cope with the losses after the heavy downpour. The MP, who has since visited the constituency to ascertain the extent of damage to property running into thousands of Ghana cedis, said NADMO was yet to respond to distress calls from the people, a situation which he noted, has compounded the pain and sufferings of the affected communities. He cited for instance, a village called Abota, near the district capital Ejura, where an estimated number of people had been rendered homeless due to the rains and storm last Friday. Several houses had their roofs completely ripped off by the storm, others also had their rooms flooded leading to loss of household belongings, we need urgent help from NADMO and other charity organizations, he bewailed. Hon. Bamba said he was appalled at the apparent neglect by the state authority to the plight of the people, warning that the situation could get worse in the days to come if there was no immediate intervention as victims were likely to contract other environmental borne diseases such as cholera and malaria. The MP told The Chronicle in an interview that he was personally sourcing for funds from friends and loved ones to purchase immediate needs for the victims but regretted it would not suffice the huge damage caused as a result of the disaster.
