30 Ganjamen Busted

The Central Regional Police Command over the weekend arrested 30 suspected Indian hemp dealers and criminals at Cape Coast during a special operation organised by the Police Service upon the instructions of the Inspector General of Police (IGP). The suspects were arrested with Indian hemp, mobile phones and other assorted items at some known ghettos at Amissekyir, Intsin, Abura and around Legion in Cape Coast. The special exercise was organised throughout the country and it is expected to take place frequently especially at the various hideouts of Fulani headsmen. Briefing the press, the Regional Police Commander, DCOP Ransford Moses Ninson, stated that the Police administration has observed that Fulani headsmen together with some Ghanaian armed robbers who have been attacking people on highways and killing innocent citizens are hiding at these ghettos, hence the need to chase them out. DCOP Ninson said the administration has decided to provide security to persons and their property on the highway as well as market places to reduce the activities of armed robbers during the night and at dawn. He hinted that plans were underway for the Police to provide escorts to vehicles such as STC, Metro Mass Transit, Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) among others, during their trips. We are appealing to executives of these transport unions to inform the police about their movement to enable us to put armed police men in the vehicle to rescue them in case of any robbery attack, he added. He emphasised the need for traders not to travel with huge sums of money, saying they could take advantage of the different money transfer services via the various mobile networks, so they redraw their monies when they get to their destination. DCOP Ninson hinted that the visibility patrol would be increased around the Cape Coast Castle to reduce the attack of thieves on tourists who visit the castle. The regional police commander underscored the need for residents to give information about the hideouts of criminals such as car snatchers, drug dealers and armed robbers to enable them to arrest them. Police act on information since we are not magicians so try to help us to move these criminals out of our country since we want to reduce the crime rate if not totally stop it, he said.
