A WELL-RECOGNIZED campaigner against Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) and the Chief Executive Officer of Research Foundation for Science, Technology and Ecology of New Delhi, India, Dr. Vandana Shiva has called on the Ghanaian Parliament to carefully examine the adoption of the Plant Breeders Bill which is currently at the consideration stage, saying Ghanaian will stand to lose.
At a forum organized by Food Sovereignty Ghana (FSG) in collaboration with Alliance For Food Sovereignty In Afric a(AFSA) in Accra, Dr. Shiva who was the guest of honour claimed that the same companies that produce the pesticides that have polluted the ecology for several decades are those who are advocating the use of GMOs in place of the indigenous method of farming.
She said during the 2nd World War these same companies were those who produced chemical weapons in fighting humanity and it was one of the worst atrocities in the human history was committed..
According to Dr Shiva, the GMO technology induces the plants to produce its own poison that fights against pests, and the poison the plants releases destroys soil and finally end up in the blood of the final consumer making the humans super herbicide.
�Herbicides are weapon against humanity,� she referred to the infamous speech of ex-American president Henry Kissinger during the Vietnam War that �food can be used as a weapon� and herbicides are hazardous to the health of mankind and has become the number one killer on earth.
The expert explained that the farmers do not need plant breeders� bill, but rather farmers� right. She cautioned that farmers who will use the GMO seeds will be plunged into total debt like what happened in some parts of India.
She stated that if the seed fails, the farmer will still buy, but in reality the producers and distributors of GMO seeds do not lose.
Secondly, if the consumers through the eating of GMO foods contract diseases such as leukemia or cancer through the toxics in the food these same companies are manufacturers of cancer drugs among others and that means these companies will not lose at any instance.
Through the agenda, Dr Shiva said, those behind the GMOs have plans to introduce genetically modified cotton seeds code named Beauty Cotton in Africa soon and the multibillion dollar companies behind the GMOs vowed in 1987 that by the year 2000 they will control food and health worldwide.
