Driver Grabbed For Bathing Friend With Acid

A 39-year-old driver who absconded after pouring acid on a friend for refusing to declare his position during the election petition hearing has finally been arrested by the Accra Regional Police Command. The suspect, Peter Torvineku, was arrested after several months in hiding. His accomplice, Gyasi Obeng, currently on the run, is wanted by the police. Briefing DAILY GUIDE, Chief Superintendent Paul Kontomah, Accra Regional Crime Officer, said the complainant in the case is a private security guard while the suspect is a driver. On August 8, 2013, at about 4:00pm, the complainant was weeding a parcel of land belonging to a man called Red at Okponglo near Legon, when the suspects approached him. Peter, in the company of Samuel Obeng Gyasi, drove in a taxi to the place where the complainant was working and asked of his view on the election petition then pending at the Supreme Court. The complainant retorted that they should leave him alone and let peace prevail in the country, but his response did not go down well with the suspect and his accomplice and so they left angrily. Some hours later, Peter and Gyasi returned to the complainant, who was still working on the land, to engage him in a hot argument with the intention of forcing him to declare his stand on the election petition hearing. The complainant then asked them to leave the area and this further provoked the suspects who poured acid on him. Due to the effect of the acid, the two managed to escape from from the complainant who initially held the trousers of Gyasi. In the course of their escape, the voter and National Health Insurance identity cards of Gyasi fell from his pocket. The complainant was rushed to the Police Hospital for medical attention and the matter reported to the police. The two after the act went into hiding until June 11, 2014, when Peter Torvineku was spotted at Kwabenya, near Madina. He was immediately apprehended and handed over to the police for prosecution. He would be arraigned before court soon.
