As the nation marks the 32nd MARTYRS DAY celebration today, June 30; the Legal Advocacy Foundation has commiserated with the families of the gallant high court Justices and a Retired Army Officer who were "gruesomely murdered while serving their motherland" in their quest to uphold the laws of the Republic. Remembering the immense gallantry of the three High Court Justices, the President and Founder of the Legal Advocacy Foundation, Lawyer Maurice Ampaw urged the Judiciary not to kowtow to any party or individual's whims in pursuit of justice. Lawyer Maurice Ampaw, in a press statement, charged the Justices to wean themselves from "all forms of control and manipulation and must be truly independent, and assertive in administering justice." The Foundation also called for an "amendment of Articles 144,146 and 153 of the 1992 Constitution" to safeguard the Judiciary. Read the statement below: STATEMENT BY LEGAL ADVOCACY FOUNDATION IN HONOUR AND REMEMBERANCE OF OUR THREE GALLANT HIGH COURT JUSTICE AND A RETIRED ARMY OFFICER Today, the 30th day of June, 2014 marks the 32nd MARTYRS DAY celebration in Remembrance and honour of the gallant Three High Court Justices and a Retired Army Officer who were gruesomely murdered while serving their motherland by upholding constitutionalism and laws of the land. They were prepared to administer justice without fear or favour, affection or ill-well to ensure the justice was not sold to the highest bidder. We need a vibrant, effective and efficient judiciary that can administer justice on behalf of the people by upholding rule of law and constitutionalism. The Judiciary must wean itself from all forms of control and manipulation and must be truly independent and assertive in administering justice. As we honour and celebrate those gallant men and women of the land, let me take this opportunity to call on all Ghanaian to pray and support the judiciary financially to fulfill their constitutional mandate. I call for the amendment of Articles 144, 146 and 153 of the 1992 Constitution, for the greater protection of the Head of the Judiciary who has the constitutional responsibility to administer and supervise the judiciary to ensure justice for all. I wish to take this opportunity to commend the leadership of the Ghana Bar Association especially Nene Amegatcher and the General Secretary Justice Amenuvor for promoting rule of law by ensuring accountability and probity under our current constitutional dispensation. We fully support their statement on the state of the judiciary and their stand on the sending of over $ 3 million via chartered flight to the Black Star Team in Brazil, as it offends the Financial Intelligent Act, the Bank of Ghana Act as well as directive and the Money Laundering Act. This is an unlawful act. I call on all judges to emulate the shining example of these gallant judges and do all within their constitutional mandate to promote rule of law and constitutionalism.
