A/R Foreign Traders Call For Dialogue With GUTA

Foreign traders in the Ashanti Region are calling for dialogue to resolve issues surrounding their involvement in retail business. The traders argue any attempt to close their shops could have reciprocal effect on Ghanaians who are also doing business in foreign countries. The Ghana union of Traders Association recently held a protest against foreigners engaged in retail market. GUTA is calling government to flush out foreigners involved in the retail business as stipulated by The GIPC Act 2013 (Act 865). Some foreign traders in the country, mostly Nigerians, say such moves will affect Ghanaians who are trading in other foreign countries. Speaking to Ultimate Radio, the Vice President of the Nigerian Traders Association, Obodoekwe Eliazar, said cool heads must prevail to dialogue instead of the trade ministrys decision to close down shops own by foreigners in the country who are into the retail business. I will personally suggest that we have a dialogue between the Nigerians, the indigenes and GUTA to know to what extent foreigners are allowed to trade, he beckoned. He indicated that if such education doesnt go down well with the indigenes and the Nigerians, even the legitimate Nigerian business men could be evicted forcefully from the country. The Trades Ministry is however constituting a thirteen member task force made up of members of GUTA, the security services and other allied trade agencies.
