Patients Abused At Amasaman Hospital

Residents of Amasaman in the Ga West District of the Greater Accra region have registered their displeasure at what they describe as a complete dissatisfaction of the service by the government hospital workers in the area. According to the residents, they are emotionally and psychologically abused by some of the nurses at the Amasaman Government Hospital any time they visit seeking medical attention. We are no longer comfortable with the kind of treatment the nurses and some of the doctors meted to us. In fact for some of us we prefer to seek medical attention from the St. Moses Clinic at Pokuase than at the Amasaman Governmental Hospital, some frustrated patients decried. St. Moses Clinic is a private clinic located at Pokuase, a few meters away from Amasaman. In an interview with Today, one resident who spoke on condition of anonymity revealed that she had been severely assaulted by some of the nurses, especially at the Maternity Department of the hospital when she went there to deliver her first baby. Being her first time, she said she went through a lot of stress and pain throughout the nine months of her pregnancy and during her day of delivery, she had a severe pain right from the morning at home. She said around 10:00 P.M., she was rushed to the hospital by her mother and elder sister. The delay in going to the hospital, she said, was because she had already been informed by some residents in the area of the wicked treatment she was likely to go through in the hands of some of the nurses in Amasaman Hospital if she delayed in giving birth after arrival. So I decided to rather stay home and go through the minor pain stages before going to the hospital, just to save myself from insults and beatings by the cruel nurses as was told, the nursing mother said. Continuing, she said to her surprise when they arrived at the hospital around 11:45 P.M., they were told by the security man at the maternity ward that the nurses were asleep and could not attend to any patient until 4:00 AM. On her side, one Maria Ibrahim from Taifa, a suburb of Accra, disclosed that on the 15th November, 2013 she was sent to the hospital by her husband to run a pregnancy scan. This, she said, is normally done by a female nurse in many of the hospitals, but to her surprise it was done by a male nurse in Amasaman Government Hospital. When Today confronted the Director of Health at the hospital, Miss Adelaide Setordji, she confirmed the report and apologised to any patient(s) for any inconveniences that might have caused them as a result of ill-treatment from the workers. She disclosed that management is taking steps to embark on a public day forum to gather some information from their clients.
