8.5-km Road Remains Uncompleted After 13 Years

Rehabilitation of the 8.5-kilometre Fawoade-Adwumakase-kese-Aboabogya road in the Afigya-Kwabre District, remains uncompleted after 13 years, thus causing a lot of inconvenience, anguish and frustration among people in communities along the road. The delay of the project is affecting health care delivery, as the sick go through hell to reach the nearest facility at Aboabogya. It had also slowed down the economic activities of the people. They are, therefore, demanding that the job is taken away from the contractors, Care Construction Company Limited, and re-awarded. Mr Osei Kwaku, a mason at Aboabogya summed up the frustration of the people, saying, The contractors are not showing any sign of seriousness on the project, and that it is difficult to understand why their contract had not been terminated all this while. He said they have had enough, and appealed to the awarding authority to act. An 84-year old woman at Aduman, Madam Adwoa Fordjour, said it was a nightmare traveling on the road to attend hospital at Aboabogya. Its bad nature has become a disincentive, as many commercial drivers refuse to ply it, creating severe transportation difficulties for the people. These revelations came up when the Ghana News Agency (GNA) visited the area under STAR-Ghanas sponsored media auditing and tracking of development projects, an initiative launched to put a spotlight on how governments resources were helping to transform the lives of the rural population. The objective is to ensure transparency, and promote good governance. The entire road stretch is covered with potholes and deep gullies, with the contractors reported to have abandoned the site after laying the drains and completing three bridges. Mr Kwaku Oppong-Kyekyeku Kaakyire, District Chief Executive (DCE), shared the frustration and disappointment of the people, saying, the project has been unduly delayed. Anytime, they attempted to terminate the job, the contractors would quickly move equipment to site and pretend to be working. He said he was deeply troubled by the conduct of the contractors, and vowed to take the appropriate steps to ensure that the project was executed without any further delay. Mr Kwadwo Yankyira, foreman of the construction company, said lack of funding, was responsible for the delay. He said they returned to the road about three months ago, and he promised to work hard to complete the project to end the sufferings of the people. Communities served by the road include, Ebom-Bomfa, Aduman, Adubinso, Swedru, Adwumakase-kese, Fawoade, Aduamoa, Bampanase and Aboabogya.
