Shortage Of Anti-Retroviral Syrup At KATH

A paediatrician at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, Dr Anthony Enimel, has hinted that some children living with HIV at the facility are at risk of dying owing to the non-availability of anti-retroviral syrup for children. He said that situation had compelled doctors at the hospital to administer portions of the anti-retroviral (cakes) meant for adults to the children, to help stabilise their lives. That notwithstanding, he said between January and May this year eight children died because of the issue of resistance and the inability of the hospital to provide them with other support. Dr Enimel made this known at the launch of Voices of Children Living with HIV in Ghana (VOCH), an NGO, in Kumasi. The NGO aims at mobilising resources to support children suffering from HIV. The NGO was formed three months ago and is currently taking care of 30 children, aged eight to 14. The paediatrician said the current situation where children living with HIV had to use adult drugs did not augur well for them. Dr Enimel advised the youth to be cautious of social media, because it was making them promiscuous. He said if care was not taken, most youth would be exposed to sex and other social vices which, in the long run, would lead to the spread of diseases, with many consequences.
