The government has procured 200 luxury buses for the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Ghana Limited to enhance public transport. The buses, which are expected in the country next month, would increase the company�s fleet by more than 700 buses. The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the MMT, Mr Noble John Appiah, made this known at the opening session of a mid-year review meeting of the management of the company at Fumesua in the Ejisu Juaben Municipality in the Ashanti Region yesterday. Mr Appiah said the company was also procuring additional 30 buses from its internally generated funds. Moreover, he said the MMT was engaged in an ongoing programme to repair about 120 broken-down buses. Fuel consumption The CEO said following the introduction of an ICT-based fuel control mechanism, the company had been able to reduce its fuel consumption by 20 per cent. Explaining how the system worked, Mr Appiah said all the buses had been connected to a central system where fuel consumption was constantly monitored. He said the system had injected some efficiency in the company�s operations and urged institutions running fleet of vehicles to use the system to check on their fuel consumption. Administrative manager In an interview with the Daily Graphic, the Administrative Manager of the MMT, Mr Stephen Yeboah, said there was need for the company to send some of its staff members to other countries with well-established public transport systems to study best practices in the management of public transport.
