UTAG Warns Of Dire Consequences Should The Court Fail To Force Govt To Pay Them

President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana [UTAG], Dr. Samuel Ofori-Bekoe has said despite government good-natured agreement to pay striking teachers their 2013/14 Book and Research Allowance arrears, their strike action still holds until full payment is done. According to him, the next approach by the association [UTAG] if the court fails to force government to pay fully all arrears will be detrimental to all stakeholders. I dont want to speculate but if the court fails uswe will know what to do in a short possible time, he said on OKAY FMs morning show Ade Akye Abia. University teachers have indicated their resolve to seek court redress to get government to cough up their research and book allowance after dialogue between the two parties fell on rocks. UTAG is demanding the payment of book and research allowances which have been in debts for several months. However, after a three-month long-drawn-out labour conflict, government has finally agreed to pay the 2013/14 book and research allowance arrears owed university lecturers within one month. But Dr. Samuel Ofori-Bekoe doubt if the monies will be paid fully. We [lecturers] need the money to do our researches before we will go back to teach. The book and research allowance is for instructional and promotional purposes. We cant just go to class and teachwe have to research, he told host Kwame Nkrumah Tikese
