THE FORMER General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, has said the attitude of the General Secretary of the People's National Convention, (PNC), Bernard Monah suggests that he is a sympathizer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He challenged him to declare his position as to which political party he belongs. According to him, the PNC scribe has been active in all NDC activities and had partnered them to undertake many projects, saying, �Every Ghanaian who follows politics knows that Bernard Monah is an NDC member and there is no way he can deceive us.� His allegation was a direct response to Mr. Monah�s comment on the Ghana Bar Association�s (GBA) call on the president to appoint someone who is morally upright to replace Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan as the new chair of the Electoral Commission (EC) prior to 2016 general election. In an interview on Okay FM, Mr. Monah urged GBA to declare their political affiliation since they were engaging themselves in partisan politics one way or the other. But, in a sharp rebuttal, Mr. Owusu-Afriyie, affectionately call �Sir John� said GBA played a major role in the growth of democracy in Ghana and must be allowed to make their suggestions. �He (Monah) doesn�t know the role that the Bar had played in the development of democracy that we are taking for granted. He doesn�t know the people who had suffered and sacrificed themselves for Ghanaian politics to reach this far. �He is not on the same level with the members of the association. If he gets the chance to sit on radio then he starts making some comments,� he said. Mr. Monah he said should not hide behind the PNC to carry out his work for the NDC and that his utterances clearly shows that he had some affiliations with the ruling NDC. Going forward, the former secretary said Ghana needed an electoral commissioner who is honest, and cannot be influenced by any political party or president. This he said will make election results free and fair. He further accused the chairman of the EC, Dr Afari Gyan of conspiring with the NDC to rig the 2012 general election and was fair on the part of GBA to suggest for a new electoral commissioner. �No one can say that Afari Gyan was not influenced by the NDC during the 2012 general election. If members of the NDC stand then he stands, if they sit then he sits,� he mentioned. He suggested that the Christian Council, GBA and other independent societies should be involved in choosing the next electoral commissioner who would be non-partisan. According to him, Dr. Afari Gyan had not leave behind a good legacy and will be a disgrace for him to retire with the shame he had created for himself. �If you ask majority of Ghanaians, they will tell you that Dr. Afari Gyan disgraced himself in the previous general election,� adding that the current electoral commissioner had lost the respect and trust that people had in him and was wise for people to call for the change.
