Ridge Hospital Expansion: So Far So Good

Restructuring and expansion of the Ridge Government Hospital in Accra has taken shape with construction work progressing very steadily, the DAILY HERITAGE can confirm after a visit to the hospital on Tuesday. The reconstruction of Ridge hospital is in line with Government of Ghanas quest to provide every region in Ghana with secondary level referral Regional Hospital resulting in government securing a Two Hundred and Fifty Million US dollars (U$ 250m) loan for the facility. The work has created limited space for movement of staff, patients and vehicles but the management of the hospital is urging the public to bear with the hospital since it is for a positive cause. In an interaction with the paper, the medical director of the hospital, Dr. Obeng-Apori said the hospital is impressed at the level of work ongoing currently. Touching on the challenges the construction work has brought to them, he said it has caused the relocation of their physiotherapy, CSSD, the pharmacy, the laundry, staff canteen, as well as the entry point to the facility. Dr. Obeng-Apori said the situation has brought some congestion to the place and is appealing to the general public and patients who visit the hospital to bear with them since its for a good purpose. According to him, the work of the contractor is not interfering with their work at the hospital, but it is the noise from their machines that are a bit worrying and tasked users to bear with them The paper observed that there have been various demarcations and allocations for vehicles to provide comfort for everyone who comes to access the place. The contractor, Messrs Bouygues Batiment International is building a permanent structure which would expand the current 191 beds facility to a whopping number of between 420 and 600 beds to ease congestion at the hospital. The project also includes a hostel, teaching hospital among other facilities. Construction is expected to last for 36 months after commencement.
