UN Team Develops Programme To Support Ghana�s Ebola Plan

The United Nations (UN) Country Team in Ghana has developed a set of programmes to support Ghana�s Ebola Preparedness Plan. The programme covers surveilance, prevention and containment among other activities. Mr Haile Girmay, the acting UN Regional Coordinator, led a team of officials from the Country Team in Ghana to the Flagstaff House today to brief the Chief of Staff, Mr Prosper Douglas Bani, about the programme. He said the Un took great interest in Ghana�s efforts at battling the disease in the three most affected countries of West Africa. It would therefore do everything possible to help the country also put in measures to prevent the disease and, in the event of any case being reported, be able to contian in immediately. Chief of Staff Mr Bani commended the UN for its continuous support in the fight against the Ebola virus disease. He gave an assurance that President Mahama, who chair ECOWAS, would continue to show leadership to ensure that the disease was contained in the effected countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Mr Bani said Ghana�s preparedness was on course and that there was cause for alarm. He stated that the country�s entry points had been tightened to prevent anyone carrying the virus from entering the country. The Chief of Staff ststed that the first of the three national treatment centres was almost ready at Tema while work on those in Kumasi and Tamale were progressing. Besides, government had provided funds for the establishment of isolations centres in all the regional hospitals as well as the Korle-Bu and Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospitals. The Ministry of Works and Housing, Mr Bani said, had also made avilable a building in Accra to be developed into the national Ebola Emergency Operations centre adding that he had given instructions for the centre to be ready by the next 10 days. Mr Bani stated that Ebola caused severe economic and health problems and must be prevented at all cost. Present was the Minister fo Health, Dr Kwaku Agyemang Mensah.
