China Chairs Saga: A Missed Opportunity To Showcase Ghana

Former Member of Parliament for Okaikoi South, Nana Akomea has described as �shameful� Parliament�s decision to import chairs from China for the refurbishment of the house. According to him, "Parliament is the soul of democratic government so everything in the House should be symbolic�. Nana Akomea�s sentiments is shared by many who have lampooned the leadership of the House for disregarding President Mahama�s directive on all government agencies to purchase made in Ghana goods. Some Members of Parliament have questioned due diligence that went into the decision to import the furniture. This is because days after they came from recession, the new chairs and tables have started breaking. Efforts by the leadership of both Majority and Minority to defend the decision to import the chairs have made it murkier. On Asempa FM�s Ekosii Sen programme Monday, Nana Akomea said �we have missed a big opportunity to showcase Ghana and instill confidence in our people�. He blamed political leadership both in government and opposition for failing to lead the Made in Ghana campaign after it was announced by President Mahama in his State of the Nation Address. �We have missed an opportunity to lead the Made in Ghana campaign at the highest level. It�s a failure of political leader� he added. Nana Akomea is convinced if goods made in Ghana are patronized, it would help to stabilize the cedi which hitherto has seen an historical depreciation major trading currencies. The former legislator noted that it will also to generate employment for the youth in particular and help transform the Guggisberg economy into an industrial one. Nana Akomea expressed disappointment in his former colleges for not setting an example by giving the contract to a local furniture manufacturer for others to follow.
