Government Asked To Pass Affirmative Action Bill

Nana Ama Amissah III, Paramount Queen Mother of Mankessim, has called on government to help fast track the passage of the Affirmative Action Bill into law. She said the passage of the bill into law on time would help facilitate the development of women in the society. In an interview with Ghana News Agency during a two- day validation workshop on the Affirmation Action Bill, in Accra, Nana Ama Amissah III explained that the bill provides a framework to help eliminate discrimination, on the basis that each citizen shares equal right to self- development. The workshop was under auspices of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, an international non-governmental organisation devoted to promote security, social democracy and economic development. The Queen Mother suggested that people at the grassroots must be sensitised and educated in the various local languages with regards to what the affirmation action law would stand for, as well as what it intends to achieve. Touching on chieftaincy as an institution in relation to the bill; she said as Queen mothers they are eager to support the initiative, considering the role they play in the society, so far as development is concern. She stated that in the various traditional areas in Ghana, chiefs attending functions are usually accompanied by queen mothers due to the ideas and inputs they bring on board, unfortunately when it comes to women in public life, a different story is told. She said there is the need to enact a law, where women with equal abilities would have opportunities, regardless of their gender. The Paramount Queen Mother therefore, appealed to stakeholders especially members of parliament, not to delay in the process of passing the bill into law.
