A Vice Chairperson aspirant of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has rubbished calls by the former President of the country, Jerry John Rawlings for an overhaul of the current leadership of the party in order for it to stand any chance of winning the 2016 elections.
The former president has said on Eyewitness News on Thursday that the NDC risked losing the elections in 2016 should it contest the elections with the current leadership, some of whom he believes have been corrupted by �by patronage and money.�
�They [NDC] seem to lack the sort of integrity that is required in the leadership of this party. It appears some of them have compromised themselves, some of them have been involved in things that is making it almost impossible and difficult for them to ensure that the gear changes on the situation in the government and I believe that if we bring on board people who have not compromised themselves, people who have not allowed themselves to be corrupted by patronage or money, we could be doing better than what is going on, or what we are doing� ,� he said.
Jerry John Rawlings also called for Kofi Adams, who has declared his intention to contest for the position, to be elected as the National Organizer by the delegates of the NDC, to help the party regain its �lost integrity.�
However, according to Mr. Ampofo, who is a former Local Government Minister, believes the current executives are not to blame for the party�s recent problems and should be commended for their handling of the party given the limited resources available to them.
�Party organisation cannot be [entrusted to] a few people. I cannot agree if one wants to put the blame on a few executives who are leading the party now. The party has challenges but I think that within the limited constraints and logistics they [the party's executives] have done well,� he told Citi News.
He added that given the successes chalked by the party in the two previous elections under the leadership of the executives, it would be prudent to maintain them for the next elections as well.
If you have an executive who led us to win power [in 2008] and helped us to retain power [in 2012], one cannot discount their contribution. I think that they have done well,� he stated.
