Metro Mass Transit Rescued

An alternative picture has been painted about the operations of the Metro Mass Transit Company Limited and it largely exonerates the Managing Director Noble John Appiah of taking unilateral decisions without recourse to the board, a charge leveled against him recently. A caller, who eventually walked into the offices of DAILY GUIDE said, I want to put a closure to what is an unnecessary media campaign against a transport company which has so far avoided the pitfalls of previous companies in this delicate industry. The caller, who pleaded anonymity, claimed to have a limited knowledge about what he described as a boardroom rumbling over the stewardship of the chief executive. While some of them agree with the stewardship of the managing director others appear to have taken entrenched positions and think for any little expenditure these must be referred to the board for approval, he said. According to him, it was practically unfeasible for the managing director to turn to the board for every little purchase, adding that the operations of the company would have ground to a halt for a typical transport company which depends upon various consumables for survival. The caller, who claims to have been associated with the company from its inception until recently, said he took exception to the deliberate attempt to run down the management of the social intervention transport company, whose fortunes have witnessed a major turnaround in recent times. He said the previous ease with which drivers generated receipts for refund of money on fuel purchase on the highways has been plugged. When DAILY GUIDE eventually made contact with the managing director, he declined to comment on the matter for the second time. Following the approval to a company by the tender committee to supply tyres to the transport company, the deal was revoked and rather awarded to a firm which could not meet the terms of the arrangement. Two hundred new buses have been imported to augment the fleet of the company for which drivers are going to be given refresher training, DAILY GUIDE has learnt. A tracking system to manage rogue drivers has been introduced under the current management, the paper gathered. The efficient use of fuel for the fleet of buses currently has become subject of a raging misunderstanding among some board members, a source told DAILY GUIDE. Metro Mass Transit is battling an image challenge, having recorded avoidable accidents in the past and rising running cost. A recent advertisement for the recruitment of drivers of a certain caliber is yet to meet its target, an effort which has earned the managing director query.
