Metro Mass Workers Petition Minister

Workers of the Metro Mass Transit Limited have petitioned the Transport Minister over the decision to ask the Managing Director Noble Appiah to step aside. In a petition signed by the Chairman of the Senior Staff union, Delali Kumah Ahenkorah, the workers accused the Board Chairman of being the brain behind the negative developments lately. The senior and junior staff unions of MMT pointed out that they have petitioned the Managing Director on certain critical issues affecting the company. They claimed to have asked Noble Appiah, the Managing Director to probe what they described as the clandestine towing of some of MMT buses from our yards at various parts of the country allegedly under the instruction of the Deputy Managing Director, which are against the companys laid down procedure. According to the workers, asking the Managing Director to step aside would affect the operations of the company since the one who would take over has already entangled himself in a lot of underhand dealings in his short stay in the company something which would soon be in the public domain. The Managing Director, they claimed, has put in place a five -year strategic plan which has given the entire staff a direction towards the achievement of the companys goals, which helped increase revenue between 2013 and 2014 when he assumed office. They also cited the introduction of a job evaluation team to evaluate and come out with appropriate salary structure for the company. The bus and fuel tracking system to monitor the fuel consumption and operational fleet on daily basis is affecting some managers, especially in Kumasi who have been benefiting from such deals. They accused the Board Chairman and Deputy Managing Director of being responsible for the woes of the company, adding that if nothing is done to stop them, the company would grind to a halt. The Board Chairman is currently chairing the tender committee which in our view should not be so. The best signal that this action gives is that the chairman will be interfering in the day to day activities of the company, what we expect of a credible Board Chairman is to sit back and give strategic directives and mediate whenever there is a deadlock, they said. They claimed he also registered as a supplier to MMT prior to his appointment as board chairman of MMT. The workers have challenged the Board Chairman to make public within 24 hours minutes of meetings which gave the nod for certain decisions he unilaterally made. They said they would advise themselves if the decision on the Managing Director is not reversed by Thursday.
