MP To Assist Journalists In Skills Update

Mr Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah, Member of Parliament for Ho-West, on Saturday pledged to assist media personnel in the Volta Region with short residential skills update courses. He also proposed an awards scheme to honour hardworking journalists in the region as well as some deserving people in the Ho-West Constituency. Mr Bedzra rmade the pledge at the 2014 Bedzrah-Volta media interaction, held in Ho. The MP, who had consistently organised the yearly evening-out for the past four years, said every institution was striving to raise standards and so should media organisations. Mr Anthony Bells Kafui Kanyi, stand-in President of the Volta Regional branch of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), complained about mediocrity among some journalists. He said having the gift of the gab alone should not make anyone a journalist and, therefore, mooted the idea of some training schedules for personnel in the media periodically. He said the GJA-Volta was also liaising with the relevant regulatory institutions to check the status of mushrooming journalism training schools. Mr Francis Ganyaglo, Deputy Volta Regional Minister, said it was important stories on development projects were put in their right perspectives. He suggested that the GJA organised field trips for journalists periodically, using the media bus at the Volta Regional Co-ordinating Council. Mr Benjamin Kpodo, MP for Ho-Central, said journalists competence was important to the national development agenda, wondering whether it was out of prejudice that some put out one-sided stories. Mr Kwame Agbodza, MP for Adaklu, said it was important journalists brought all sides on issues to the fore.
