South African Airways Introduces Direct Flight From Accra To Washington

From August 2nd, 2015, South African Airways (SAA) will begin a direct flight from Kotoka International Airport to the Dules International Airport in Washington DC.

SAA will fly four times a week - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday - to Washington DC on its A340-600s aircraft and this is to enhance their operations in Africa.

The direct flight from Ghana to Washington is to also support existing trade relations and shore up Ghana’s robust economic outlook.

During a press briefing in Accra, the Executive Africa Hub Projects Manager, KendyPhohleli, mentioned that the move was “based on sound business principles as there is demand for passengers wanting to fly from Ghana to the United States directly”.

He added that "SAA's decision to route some of its North American-bound flights to Ghana, is based on sound business principles as there is considerable demand for passengers to fly from Ghana to the US".

The route will be served by A340-600s featuring 42 full-flat 180 beds in premium business class and 275 seats in economy class.

Travellers will be able to experience 4 Star Skytrax rated airline service to North America which offers world-class quality product and service standards.


Kendy Phohleli further disclosed that SAA has formed a partnership with domestic carrier, Africa World Airlines (AWA) to offer customers more travel options within the West African sub – region

For now, SAA is currently running a promotional fare on its return tickets to Washington DC from Accra for $390 (excluding taxes). The promo ends in October.

SAA is South Africa's national flag carrier and the continent's most awarded airline. It serves 67 destinations worldwide in partnership with SA Express, Airlink and its low cost carrier Mango.

In North America, SAA operates daily nonstop flights from New York-JFK and direct flights from Washington D.C.-IAD (via Accra, Ghana and Dakar, Senegal) to Johannesburg.

SAA has codes share agreements with United Airlines, Air Canada and JetBlue Airways, which offer convenient connections from more than 30 cities to SAA's flights.
