Circuit Court Refuses Bail For Cop Who Robbed Taxi Driver
An Accra Circuit Court has refused to grant bail to a policeman who allegedly robbed a taxi driver at gunpoint at the North Industrial Area in Accra.
The court refused bail to General Lance Corporal Daniel Mensah on the grounds that robbery was a non-bailable offence.
The policeman, together with two accomplices now at large, attacked the taxi driver and robbed him of GH¢2, 170 at 3.15 a.m. on May 23, 2014 and bolted.
Luck, however, eluded him when his wallet, containing his identification (ID) cards, was found and used to trace him.
Bail application His counsel, Mr Augustine Gyamfi, had prayed the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that his continued incarceration was causing untold hardship to the family of the accused person.
According to him, the accused person had remained in police custody for over eight months since his arrest.
The court, however, declined the bail application and remanded Mensah to reappear on February 10, 2015.
Charges He was charged with two counts of conspiracy and robbery but he had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Background The complainant, George Boahene, is a taxi driver at Dansoman in Accra, while the accused person is a police officer stationed at the Dansoman Police Station.
At about 3.15 a.m. on May 23, 2014, the complainant, who was on his early morning rounds, was asked by the accused, together with two accomplices at the Radio Gold area at Lartebiokoshie in Accra, to convey them to the North Industrial Area in Accra.
On reaching a spot near TV Africa, Mensah and his accomplices attacked the complainant at gunpoint and took a sum of GH¢2,170 from him and bolted.
In the course of fleeing the scene, the accused person’s wallet containing his police ID card, Pro-credit ATM card, Standard Chartered Visa Card and other documents fell from his pocket.
The complainant picked the wallet and reported the issue to Peace FM, which announced that the owner of the wallet should go for it.
The ID card was used to trace the accused person to Dansoman where he was arrested.
