A statistical and mathematics lecturer has suggested the institution of a law or regulation that will compel all presidential candidates of political parties seeking elections to be truthful and implement all the promises in their manifestoes when they win power.

Mr Yarhands Dissou Arthur of the College of Technology Education of the University of Education, Winneba, said such a law would keep politicians on their toes to implement all programmes and projects enshrined in their manifestoes.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in an interview in Kumasi, Mr Arthur said it was time to end failed promises by Ghanaian politicians.

He said unfulfilled promises were causing much harm to the country’s socio-economic development.

Mr Arthur cited the issue of the election of district chief executives during the 2008 election as an example and said though the politicians knew it would not be feasible, they made those promises just to win votes.

The election of DCEs, he pointed out was a crucial issue that needed broad consultation and contribution of all Ghanaians before any decision could be taken.

Mr Arthur pointed out that local governance, which was the bedrock of development at the local level should not be politicized to exclude some people from participating and contributing their quotas.

He called on Ghanaians to resolve not to allow politicians to take over local governance since that would deprive them from participating in decisions that affected their daily lives at the community levels.
