58th Indec Celebration: Ghana Has A Varied Report Card - Prez. Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed concern about the fact that 58 years after independence, “Ghana has a varied report card”.

Speaking at a colorful Independence Anniversary at the Independence Square, President Mahama recounted some of the views of a cross section of Ghanaians on Ghana's 58th Independence celebration.

“… Watching a popular television’s news program yesterday, people were being asked what their opinions were about 58 years of Ghana’s independence. I watched a man who was interviewed first and he said there was no need to celebrate our independence because he did not believe that we had achieved anything in the 58 years of freedom. And he sited the power outages as a justification for his conclusion”

This was followed by a very noble lady whose opinion was that we have cause to celebrate because we have chalked some successes and that if we continue to work together, we can build on those achievements …if you ask my opinion, I will side with the woman” he said.

To President Mahama, Ghanaians must be proud of their beloved nation because of the fact that “58 years in our history, we have made mistakes and chalked many successes. We must celebrate our successes and minimize our failures”.

He further stated that notwithstanding any mistakes that may have been made in the past, Ghana is still celebrated across the world for her democracy, respect for human right, freedom of expression, ethnic harmony and religious tolerance.
