One-time Attorney General under the Mills administration, Martin A.B.K Amidu has finally let the cat out of the bag on the reason that led to exit the Mills administration.
In a statement, the ‘Citizen Vigilante’ said that the late President and his immediate advisors did not agree with him on his stance on the Woyome case.
"I had suggested that Mrs Betty Mould-Iddrisu should be persuaded to be a prosecution witness in lieu of prosecution. The Government disagreed, so I was removed from office", he said in the statement.
Reasons for the removal from office still remain scanty with Martin Amidu at the time alleging that his resolve to fight ‘gargantuan’ corruption in the Mills administration led to his removal.
“…My integrity and professionalism as a lawyer was a threat to the concealment of gargantuan crimes against the people of Ghana in which they might be implicated,” he said at the time.
However, his claim was debunked by several NDC communicators led by then press secretary to the President, Koku Anyidoho with the explanation that Mr. Amidu openly disrespected Prof John Mills at a meeting held at the castle.
Various pro-government newspapers which Mr. Amidu was later to describe as ‘rented press’ were used to force Martin out after they all came out with the banner headline ‘A-G Martin Amidu Must Go’ and editorials discrediting Mr. Amidu.
However, three years down the lane, Mr. Amidu has finally let the cat out of the bag arguing that his call for the use of the A-G before him, Betty Mould Iddrisu as a prosecution witness in the trial led to his removal.
Mrs. Betty Mould-Iddrisu was Attorney General at the time the over GH¢51 million fraudulent judgement debt was paid to Mr Woyome and his affiliates.
Mr Amidu's revelation on the reason for his exit from office is instructive in light of comments by legal practitioners regarding a possible collusion between Government and Mr Woyome in the payment of the huge judgement debt.
Most commentators on the matter have wondered why Mrs Mould-Iddrisu especially and other state officials were never invited to testify on behalf of the state.
According to a renowned lawyer, Ace Ankomah, the Attorney General's office failed to rely on Mrs Mould-Iddrisu, her deputy Ebo Barton-Odro and other state officials who played key roles in payment of the judgement debt as witnesses because it feared the officers would be embarrassed in the dock.
Justice Ajet-Nassam, the High Court judge who acquitted Mr Woyome, said in his ruling that state prosecutors hurt their case by not inviting Mrs Mould-Iddrisu and other key officials as witnesses against the NDC financier.
Mr. Amidu is not alone as New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Assin Central has also threatened to see to the prosecution of the now vice chairperson of the NDC.
