Former NPP’s Member of Parliament (MP) for Asokwa Constituency in the Ashanti Region, Maxwell Kofi Jumah has said his desire to again be an MP is shattered.

He explained that, he would rather support his party [NPP] wholeheartedly than to protest against an affirmative directives in his party that sitting female Members of Parliament (MPs) should not be contested.

Kofi Jumah’s constituency is one of such constituencies occupied by a female MP and he was considering to re-contest the Asokwa seat again after being defeated by 275 to 139 votes in a parliamentary primary organised in May 2011 by Patricia Appiagyei [now MP].

The directives to allow female MP’s to contest unopposed in the NPP was made public after a NEC meeting within the elephant fraternity.

Discussing the issue on OKAY FM’s Ade Akye Abia morning show, outspoken Kofi Jumah said that he is prepared to sacrifice his personal ambitions for the larger party interest after describing the idea as laudable.

“I support the idea for women to be involved in politics and come to parliament…I am willing to sacrifice for the party” he said

He however noted that, “Our leaders are deep thinkers and have come out with a wise decision except to say that it could have been done in another way…I can’t say I should come to Parliament by all means so I should disrespect the rules and directives of the party.”

“For now if I want to be in parliament as Asokwa MP, then I have to change my name from Kofi Jumah to ‘Afia Jumah’….that can’t be possible” he told host Kwame Nkrumah [Tikese]
