Affirmative Action Policy Could Cost Us 2016 Adwoa Safo

New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo is warning of dire consequences if the party goes ahead with the controversial affirmative action policy ahead of its parliamentary primaries.

According to her, though the policy is laudable, agitations arising from it could affect the electoral fortunes of the party in 2016.

The policy to disallow males from contesting sitting female MPs in 16 constituencies has been kicked against by many in the party.

Some aggrieved members on Tuesday March 24, 2015 stormed the party office to protest the new directive by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

They argue that the proposed policy is unconstitutional and warned NPP of risk losing the much anticipated 2016 general elections.

In support, Adwoa Safo on Oman FM called on the party's leadership to take a second look at the decision.

The MP who also stands to benefit from the policy if implemented noted that the affirmative action policy will be of no use if the NPP loses the 2016 elections.

She underscored the need for the leadership to listen to the concerns of the grassroots members and act accordingly.

“What will the party gain if many go independent or aggrieved grassroot members decide not to campaign for the party in 2016” she quizzed.

On the way forward, Adwoa Safo suggested party leadership embark on a broad consultation to reach a consensus before it is implemented.
